Why Destiny Udogie was racially abused by Liverpool fans
Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie suffered a hail of racial abuse following their match with Liverpool.
The match was one of the worst scenes that ever appeared in this Premier League season. It saw Liverpool finish a match with nine players after two were sent off for their offensive tackles. The greatest of the messes that took place was that refereeing officials denied Liverpool one of their goals. An action that saw the Merseyside Reds lose to Tottenham by one goal in the end.
There have been calls to remove the use of the VAR since it played a part in the erroneous decision the referee made and was not the first time such a mistake had taken place in a high-profile football competition.
Destiny Udogie suffered attacks along with the refereeing crew because a Liverpool player was sent off the pitch for two consecutive roughs he had directed at the Tottenham Hotspurs defender. Clearly, fans thought the player played an illegal part in their loss.
The harsh behaviours Destiny Udogie passed through in the hands of the fans littered the internet after the match in the form of racial slurs. It was so bad that Tottenham Hotspurs released a statement thereafter, saying they were disgusted.
‘We are disgusted at the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie on social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool.
‘We will work with the Premier League and, where possible, take action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Destiny.’
The Merseyside Reds also had to declare their stand since the racism might affect their deal with coloured players and how they look to the international community.
‘Liverpool FC condemns all forms of racism and discrimination and will work with the relevant authorities and social media platforms to help identify those responsible and apply the strongest possible consequences.’
Racism has been a big matter in Western countries, even in their sports circles. It is very easy for matters to deteriorate to the point that players who aren’t Caucasians, especially those of black-African descent, start to undergo racism at the hands of those who praised them when they performed well. Victor Osimhen’s recent mistreatment by his own club is an example.
