Canelo Alvarez not the face of boxing

If money and exploits were the only things that qualify boxers to become the Face of Boxing, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez should get the title. However, it is no so.

Speaking some time ago, Gervonta Davis declared that he should be the face of boxing and not Canelo Alvarez.

‘This boxing s**t [is] mine buddy. F**k a weight class I am the face,’ said Davis.

But a past report from Forbes revealed how much Alvarez made in the ring every minute. If people were always eager to pay that much to see this star, then he could be the Face of Boxing.

‘Álvarez was No. 5 on Forbes’ 2023 list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, with $110 million in pre-tax earnings over the 12 months ending in May,’ declared Forbes. ‘Since the list began in 1990, he is one of just 15 athletes to have reached nine figures in a single year, joining the likes of Roger Federer, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.’

‘In fact, Álvarez, a member of the Forbes 30 Under 30 class of 2018, can get halfway there in one fight, collecting about $1.4 million per minute for a 12-round bout.

‘That has pushed the 33-year-old super-middleweight’s career earnings to nearly $600 million (pre-tax), according to Forbes estimates—so when Álvarez says that boxing is “not about money,” it’s partly because he doesn’t need it.’

But many would disagree. Tyson Fury has been deemed the face of boxing for a long time before his underwhelming reception of boxing debutant Francis Ngannou lately. The WBC heavyweight champion found himself on the floor in the third round of the 10-round bout, though he later won by a narrow split decision.

However, the famous name in boxing is not Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. It is Tyson Fury. Concerning outside-the-ring accomplishments, Fury beats Alvarez in the sight of many by having broken free of cocaine use and being a symbol of discipline and strong will in that aspect.

Canelo has two fights to feature in next year, while Fury will meet Oleksander Usyk in the ring for the undisputed world heavyweight championship bout.
