WBC heavyweight champion Fury who was expected to fight Oleksander Usyk the WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight champion announced recently that he got injured during a sparring session. Many think the wound must have been inflicted by cruiserweight southpaw Jai Opetaia, but reports from Fury’s camp claim that a strong Croatian boxer, Agron Smakici did it.

There were speculations following Opetaia’s leaving of Fury’s training camp recently, with the main theory being that one man might have hurt the other. Froch’s current statement implied that Opetaia could be the one.

‘That sparring footage may or may not have been the right footage but it must’ve been filmed on a Nokia 8210 because it was blurry and horrible and then we never saw the cut after he got elbowed,’ Froch said to talkSport.

‘I’m devastated that it’s not happening in two weeks and I am still a little bit dubious, I’ve got my reservations as to whether or not that fight will happen in May.’

Froch later added, ‘I’m not so sure [that it will happen in May]. To start with, I wasn’t so sure about the cut, I wanted to see the cut and I wanted to see him stitched up.

‘After seeing Tyson Fury last night on his Instagram, the cut to me doesn’t look like an acute injury, it looks like an injury that is healing. It is scabbed over, the swelling has gone down, and the bruising looks about a week to ten days old.

‘What difference that has I don’t know but have they been sitting on this and waiting for the right time to give the news?’

Agron Smakici explained how the wound allegedly happened while speaking to IFL TV:

‘Unfortunately it looks like bad news because I cancelled the biggest fight, but it wasn’t on purpose. That’s nonsense [that I don’t feel bad] because I’m telling you it was a punch.

‘I threw a punch. I feel the punch [but] because how he was pulling my head forward, maybe it goes to the elbow. I didn’t [do it] on purpose.’

Whether the footage was artificial or not is still a mystery.
