Carl Froch gives second opinion on Francis Ngannou versus Tyson Fury
Former boxer turned pundit Carl Froch has given a second view of the scoring of the match between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou, following his initial statement after the match.
Some high-profile figures started to say recently that a rewatch of the match changed their views on who should have been given the belt in Saudi Arabia when the match ended, so Froch might have tried to be sure his former judgement was correct.
‘I watched it back, cause I’m a consummate professional,’ alleged Carl Froch. ‘when I say something I like to make sure I can stand by my convictions with honesty. I have to say, when I watched it on the night it looked Ngannou beat up Fury with dropping him, but I think it was the shock factor of the left hook.’
Ngannou’s daringness and aggressive competition might have diverted people’s attention from some good efforts Tyson Fury was making and points he was scoring, since no one expected a boxing debutant to do so well against someone many take as not just ‘The Gipsy King’ as his nickname goes, but the king of boxing.
When Francis Ngannou struck down the British champion in the third round, most were stunned. Carl Froch’s present position is that the fight looked like a draw to him after he watched it again, but it also seemed he was ashamed of going back on his former statement.
‘But when you watch it back and score it with the volume off, it’s closer,’ continued Froch. ‘I’m still gonna say Ngannou won the fight, because for me he beat up Fury. But when you score it you really can make a case for Tyson Fury winning the fight, only by one or two rounds.
‘So I’m standing by Ngannou winning the fight … but with a fresh mind the fight could’ve gone either way. It depends what you like.’
Most people said the judges crowned Tyson Fury the winner because not doing so would affect the undisputed world heavyweight title match between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.
Froch claimed, ‘Tyson Fury against Oleksandr Usyk is the fight we should be getting. and that’s the reason I think Ngannou didn’t get the nod last night. For me, it’s corruption at the highest level. They’ve gone out to Saudi Arabia and all that money is on the line. Everything is geared towards the fight with Fury and Usyk and Ngannou gets in there and puts a proper spanner in the works. He [Ngannou] gave Tyson Fury a bit of a beating, dropped him, made him look stupid, and he’s a novice professional.’
