Deontay Wilder ducks Martin Bakole
A report from Martin Bakole’s trainer, Billy Nelson, indicates that Deontay Wilder refused to fight Bakole, a man known to be feared very much in the heavyweight division.
Wilder, the American who is the former WBC heavyweight champion, will face Joseph Parker in the ring on December 23. However, Nelson revealed while speaking to Boxing Social that Deontay Wilder got an offer to fight Bakole first.
‘I got offered it,’ said Nelson. ‘I was offered it. And we said yes, but he’s obviously selected Joseph Parker.’
It is no longer news that Martin Bakole defeated feared southpaw and lineal heavyweight champion Oleksander Usyk in a sparring session. Though it is still being argued whether Bakole beat him once or twice, since Bakole claims the latter, Usyk’s man agreed that the Congolese beat Usyk.
This trend of Bakole beating big stars during sparring earned him the informal title of The Most Feared Heavyweight, and reduced the number of boxers willing to go into the ring with him.
Still speaking to Boxing Social, Bakole’s trainer hoped that Parker would beat Wilder during the faceoff.
‘Listen, I’d love Joseph Parker to win that fight,’ he said. ‘I just think it’s a very hard fight for him, isn’t it? He has freakish power for 16 stone.’
Sometime in the middle of this year, Bakole’s promoter Ben Shalom made the following statement concerning Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk, saying the champion’s promoter believed that Bakole could beat Wilder.
‘Alex Krassyuk just messaged me after that, saying Martin Bakole beats Anthony Joshua and Martin Bakole beats Wilder, and I think everyone in boxing knows how good this guy is,’ said Shalom.
‘You never know how a fighter is going to come back when he has been out of the ring for a year, but it was business as usual. It showed how powerful he is.’
‘Now we can move on with Martin Bakole; he wants the big fights and big nights; that’s why he’s come to us.’
It is expected that Martin Bakole will feature in the February 17th boxing event, in which Tyson Fury will contend with Usyk for the undisputed world heavyweight champion title.
On the other hand, Wilder might face Anthony Joshua next if Wilder beats Parker and Joshua beats Swedish southpaw Otto Wallin.
