WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury boasted last month that he would beat Francis Ngannou both in the boxing ring and at the Octagon. Ngannou is only a former UFC fighter debuting in professional boxing, so many do not expect much from the fighter. But fans and professionals have argued that Tyson Fury should watch out for Francis Ngannou’s knockout skills.

Of all the fights Francis Ngannou won at the UFC, none of his knockouts happened later than the second round. The bout between him and Tyson Fury was set up to prove one thing: who is the greatest contemporary fighter?

Tyson Fury is eligible to represent the boxing world in the ring, having had more fights than the other lineal-heavyweight champion, Olexandr Usyk. Many believe Tyson Fury is the greatest boxer of all time, with one of them, an influential pundit, naming him the face of boxing.

Mike Tyson is training Francis Ngannou ahead of the fight, but some argue that what a novice boxer needed to face the best was not a crash course. Mike Tyson himself claimed his student has what it takes to give Tyson Fury a surprise defeat, but some called that statement hollow hype.

Ngannou, trying to prove he was not whom people thought he was, has tried to change what people would expect from him in the ring.

‘Well, you know,’ he said. ‘I have some knockout power, but you would be crazy if you walked into a fight against someone like Tyson Fury, just counting on knockout power. I’m going there to box, I’m going to walk into this fight as a boxer and I’m impressed to see how many people are counting me out of this.’

‘It also gets me excited, it’s one more thing that they keep doubting me and as usual, I will keep proving them wrong about this, I’m walking in there as a fighter. I’m not walking in there because I have a strong punch and yes, I can connect with it, I’m walking in there to fight, in case this fight goes to a decision.

I will still expect to win, even by decision, I want to be prepared and win that fight, because it will cement my position as a boxer. I’m not an MMA fighter that is crossing over, as if power is the only thing that I have, that is not true.’

There is going to be a rematch if Francis Ngannou wins Tyson Fury, but not when the reverse takes place. The whole pressure would be on Tyson Fury during this bout, not Ngannou.
