Ngannou vs Fury: ‘I think I can beat you in the cage,’ boasts Tyson Fury
Fans are still ruminating on what would happen next after WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury boasted he could defeat MMA heavyweight, Francis Ngannou in the Octagon.
The landscape-changing statement took place at a kickoff news conference held on Thursday ahead of the boxing match. Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury are set to begin what might culminate into a quarrel between the boxing world and the MMA world.
What set the ball rolling in this direction was Francis Ngannou’s rejection of the notion that Tyson Fury was a fighting champion. The MMA superstar pointed out that the boxer was only a champion at boxing and no further.
This claim did not seat well with Tyson Fury, who many think can best his fellow heavyweight boxing-king Olexandr Usyk at a boxing match. It seems the boxing match between the two (Fury and Usyk) keeps failing to materialise because of Olexandr Usyk’s disinterest. Tyson Fury’s desire to prove himself the greatest fighter of the time is well-known, so he may have seen Ngannou’s statement as an insult.
The crossover match Ngannou chose has undergone a lot of disapproval by fans of combat sports, who know the difference between training nearly all one’s life to survive only on fists and footwork, and and basing one’s hopes on the use of nearly the entire body.
Most pundits have given their predictions on the outcome of the match. Their views were largely uniform.
It was going to be a big change of environment for Francis Ngannou, but Tyson Fury is going to be in his habitat. Pundits think Francis Ngannou’s history as a knockout artist would be a wildcard at the match, each pointing out that Tyson Fury would be made to sleep if Ngannou gets a clear shot on his head.
Fury would be out of his comfort zone in the octagon, and should expect kicks at the legs and wrestling. At the time of the news conference, Tyson Fury has opened up a possibility of fighting Ngannou in the octagon after the professional boxing match. But Tyson Fury was emphatic while saying that different rules would not matter to him in Ngannou’s case, since he was 100% sure to beat him.
‘I would kick your ass in the cage, no problem, 100 percent, 100 percent. I’ll personally beat you in the boxing ring and kick your ass in the cage.
‘One hundred percent, I’ll beat you at boxing, and then I’ll beat you in the cage, no problem. … I’ll best him at boxing and then beat him in a cagefight, no two ways about it.’
Tyson Fury seems to have done his Maths on Ngannou’s abilities, according to his statement, ‘I’d like to fight Ngannou in the cage. I think I can beat him, for sure.
‘He’s not a good jiu-jitsu man. He’s not a good wrestler. He’s known for his striking, and I’m a better striker than him, and with the little gloves I would knock him out in seconds.’
Many would think Fury was stepping out of his boundary, but John Fury has announced he wanted his son Tyson Fury to fight a certain MMA heavyweight in the octagon. Fury’s team’s plan had been to do that after dealing with Ngannou’s challenge. Now it seems the landscape has changed, bringing new horizons in its wake.
‘I don’t think he can take me to the floor.,’ admitted Tyson Fury. ‘I just don’t. I seriously don’t think he can beat me in an MMA fight. Honestly, I don’t. I think I catch him on the way with an uppercut and just use my takedown defense, push him down, ‘bang, bang, bang,’ grab him, knee, elbow, game over. I’d smash him to pieces.’
The future shall tell the outcome.
