Swedish southpaw Otto Wallin was beaten so badly while fighting Anthony Joshua on December 23 that his coach Joey Gamache pulled him out in the fifth round. Wallin said how he felt about that recently.

Speaking to Boxing Social later, Wallin explained what really happened and the magnitude of the wound he sustained which made Gamache pull him out.

‘I have a fracture on my nose, it’s not completely broken, but it’s fractured,’ Wallin said.

‘I noticed that I was bleeding but when you are in the fight you have so much adrenaline and it was early in the fight.

‘I noticed that it was uncomfortable but I don’t think it made a big difference.’

Gamache’s decision paved way for Joshua to be granted his third win in a row. 2023 was a favourable year for Joshua in the ring, though there were moments in which the fighter moaned that pressure from fans and pundits were making things hard for him mentally.

The manner of Wallin’s loss was surprising to spectators due to Joshua’s state of mind before the bout, including Wallin’s performance while fighting Tyson Fury. The Swedish southpaw gave Fury a face wound that later required 47 stitches, and also took him the distance.

Wallin later said to Boxing Social that he had no problem with Gamache’s choice because the trainer cared for him, and that there was life outside boxing.

‘I didn’t disagree with him [when he chose to pull me out], Joey [Gamache] told me that he was going to stop it and I didn’t say anything,’ Joshua said. ‘Joey has been with me for ten years, he has seen me in training and almost all of my fights and he has never pulled me out of anything, so I trust Joey, he is always looking out for me and I feel very happy that I have a trainer who puts my health first.

‘There is a life after boxing, so I am very appreciative that he is looking out for me.’

Anthony Joshua looks to face Filip Hrgovic soon in his effort to be a three-time world heavyweight champion.
