WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has joined the squad of firemen, trying to put out the scepticism burning in the hearts of boxing enthusiasts concerning whether a professional bout between him and Oleksandr Usyk will take place.

Respectable personalities have been airing their views on whether the fight will ever hold this year or even next year. Even spectators who know little about boxing have found reasons why the contest might never happen this year, but the likes of Matchroom official Eddie Hearn have said things that, though they do not imply the fight will not happen, do not mean it will.

Several statements have followed that of one of the contestants, heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, who said he needed a long time to prepare and heal the wounds he collected from the battle with Daniel Dubois that controversially ended in his favour. Usyk’s announcement signified that there was a big possibility the fight would have to be postponed to next year.

Health officials will not let him fight if he has an injury that should be healed beforehand, and he can claim he needs more time to prepare if the fight were to be scheduled for this year. Tyson Fury’s opponent, Francis Ngannou, is also expected to be a tough nut to crack, and Fury is expected to collect serious wounds from the contest. The officials needed not say that Fury should recover from any injury he should not contest with before fighting Oleksandr Usyk, as everyone knows.

So there are the hurdles of Tyson Fury’s expected injury, that of Oleksandr Usyk’s unnamed bodily trouble, and that of Usyk’s need of 14 weeks to prepare for the undisputed bout. Many think the statements being made by all those connected to the Fury-Usyk fight are part of the script developed to keep enthusiasts busy and expectant. Hopes that the contest will actually hold this December might turn out to be longings for a Christmas present that will never arrive.

‘Usyk’s a sausage,’ Tyson Fury said while referring to the Ukrainian’s announcement that he had wounds and needed 14 weeks preparation gap. ‘I’m expecting it to take place in December, that’s what I’ve been told, so I’ve got no reason to disbelieve it for sure.

‘Usyk has to fight me in December, doesn’t have a choice. He’s signed a contract so if he doesn’t, he’s breached contract and he gets sued, so doesn’t really have a choice.’

Oleksandr Usyk’s exact words were, ‘I can’t say that everything’s OK, but I’m fine. Some wounds, old injuries need to be healed. Everything’s under control. I do my training sessions everyday, but I need 14 weeks for my camp. It would be enough time for me. The first weeks I’m doing my work that helps me to get ready for the training camp. Then I’m working hard for the next 12 weeks.’

According to Proboxtv, the following tweet from a trusted source signified the fight was not going to hold:

‘Tyson Fury will NOT be fighting Oleksandr Usyk in December in Saudi Arabia. I’m told by Frank Warren. He said the Saudis may postpone their plans to January, so Fury is pressing ahead with a fight in the UK. Warren hopes to make Fury vs Daniel Dubois for undisputed next year.’

Recently, Tyson Fury mistakenly said the fight was going to take place in April next year, but he corrected himself. Some think he revealed the true time of the match without planning to do so. But if the match actually takes place this year, it will be both surprising and highly spectacular.

Oleksandr Usyk still awaits what will happen after his win over Daniel Dubois is appealed for the second time.
