Why Anthony Joshua teamed up with Tyson Fury’s former coach
Anthony Joshua recently switched his boxing tutor ahead of a possible fight in December, but outsiders wonder whether he ditched his coach, Derrik James. Though he said that was not the case, it still seems he has not revealed the truth.
Rumours of the switch were proved true by David ‘KD’ Ghansa, a member of Anthony Joshua’s team, while he was talking to Boxing King Media. During this interview, the crew member tried to evaporate all assumptions that Anthony Joshua might have sacked his long-time coach, whose training helped him and had the potential to see him through great victories.
It is easy to say that Anthony Joshua requested the services of Tyson Fury’s former coach, Ben Davison, because of Joshua’s loss of the unified world boxing titles and his desire to get back to the limelight. Anthony Joshua lost his belts to Olexandr Usyk and seems unable to win a match with either Olexandr Usyk or WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
‘Anthony Joshua wants to be very active,’ revealed David ‘KD’ Ghansa. ‘He’s currently ticking over, he’s down at the Ben Davison Performance Centre at the moment. He’s ticking over with Ben, Jamie TKV, we had him in our camps in Dallas a couple times.’
Anthony Joshua later did speak for himself on the matter.
‘I’ve got to work harder and that’s what Derrick does, he’s a hard worker,’ admitted Joshua. ‘I know what sacrifice is, it’s actually gaining. [In the gym] I think ‘is he not seeing that I’m dying here?!’
‘But I realize I can’t feel sorry for myself because I’m going to get something out of this. I had to think to myself, what does this mean? He’s trying to get me to a certain level which requires going through torturous methods.’
Finally, Eddie Hearn, who is Anthony Joshua’s promoter, said Derrik James has not been abandoned. It seems the coach lacks a particular thing Anthony Joshua needs at the moment.
‘AJ is with Derrick James, 100%,’ Hearn announced. ‘But Ben is a fantastic coach and I think that has the kind of mind that AJ would tick with.
‘AJ is the kind of guy who doesn’t like to be out of camp for too long, and there is a chance he fights in December. So if that’s the case, he wanted these couple of weeks just to sharpen his tools before he heads into camp in Dallas with Derrick.
He speaks with Ben a lot, and just wanted to tick over with him before he heads back to base with Derrick James.’
There are rumours that Anthony Joshua might have a match this December.
