Why Oleksander Usyk could lose to Tyson Fury, according to former world boxing champion

Former world cruiserweight boxing champion James Toney pointed out Oleksander Usyk’s mentality that could see the Ukrainian beaten by hard hitters like Deontay Wilder.

Toney was imagining a contest between Usyk and Wilder when he made an important statement recently. His opinion likely had people remembering that Usyk’s next opponent defeated Wilder.

‘Usyk, he’s a good boxer, but he’s not aggressive,’ Toney pointed out. ‘He boxes to stay safe. Wilder. Wilder no problem. For real, [Usyk] is too soft for him.’

Lineal heavyweight champion Oleksander Usyk who holds the WBA, WBO and, IBF heavyweight titles will meet in the ring with the WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury for an undisputed world heavyweight championship bout on February 17. The battle is to hold in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

One of the things Tyson Fury is feared for is the weight behind his punches. Usyk’s nice style might fall short of what he needs to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion, according to the situation of things.

On the other hand, Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic awaits his turn to meet either of the two heavyweights.

The IBF mandatory challenger could not face Usyk because of the undisputed world heavyweight championship, but it has been announced by the IBF that the winner of the undisputed bout must face Hrgovic next or vacate the belt.

This is because anyone who loses in the battle between Fury and Usyk can ask for a rematch.

‘The IBF wrote that if I won my last fight and if Usyk beat [Daniel] Dubois, the IBF would enforce my mandatory status to fight Usyk for the title,’ he said some time ago.

‘The IBF has now allowed Tyson Fury and Usyk to do a unification first.

‘The winner of that fight is mandated to fight me immediately after, with no other intervening fight, so I expect to fight for the heavyweight championship early next year.

‘I’m disappointed at the delay, but I will stay ready, and I won’t let it distract me from my goal of winning the title. Whether against Usyk or Fury, my time is coming.’
