Zheilei Zhang: will Tyson Fury fight the Chinese?

Tyson Fury’s fight drought this year seems to be ending towards this year’s Christmas. The cause of Joe Joyce’s recent loss, Zheilei Zhang chose none other for his next fight than another Brit, the WBC heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury.

Some could joke that Tyson Fury must have been good boy this year, following the two opportunities before him, one of which he had accepted. He is going to fight Francis Ngannou on October 28 at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in a noise-stirring boxing event.

Over the weeks, Fury had been lashing out at his fellow heavyweights because none has agreed to fight him. But he has been the cause of this, mostly because of the terms of the fight contract. But will he fight Zheilei Zhang now?

Fury wants to be seen as someone that detests fear and weakness. This was made clear in his insulting public messages to fellow heavyweights like Usyk, Joshua and Wilder.

Some agree Zhang is a tough fighter. Joe Joyce praised him after the 38 years old fell by Zhang’s fists.

‘Zhang is a great fighter,’ admitted Joyce. ‘A great southpaw. He’s a fellow silver medalist and he’s probably avoided by most. It was probably a bit too far of a risk. I haven’t fought a southpaw for a long time. Just disappointing. I got myself into the position I was and it was obviously a risk to far and I paid the price.’

‘I was a bit more concentrated on what he was throwing, and warming into the fight and doing what I’d been practicing. He’s a difficult fighter. I could’ve gone another route, but I decided to take the challenge.’

‘This is not it for me. I’ve got plenty more in the tank. You should see me again out there. I’m just gonna have a bit of time off, reflect, watch the fight back and then come back new and improved.’

‘I’m gonna have to talk with my team and see what’s the best route … Hat’s off to Zhang, he’s a great fighter and I’m sure he’s gonna be in some great fights next. I’m gonna have to rebuild and come back to a different route.’

Zhang’s victory authorises him to chose to fight Olexandr Usyk, but it seems he wants to test out Fury, and earn from fighting the ‘bigger’ fighter. Tyson Fury has not replied, but he is unlikely to turn that down. Zhang has a good track record.
