‘Dollarumma’: Kylian Mbappe reacts at AC Milan fans’ treatment of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma
Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s away match at his former club AC Milan ended in more than defeat, triggering unfriendliness from Milan’s fans. Fellow team member Kylian Mbappe reacted.
Donnarumma’s exit was widely not well received by most fans of AC Milan when he joined French club PSG for a bigger pay. What seemed to be the narrative was that he betrayed his childhood club because of money.
Some fans seemed to have made paper dollars with the keeper’s face printed on them before the match because they sprayed it on the poor goalkeeper later, calling him Dollar-rumma. This was not acceptable to Kylian Mbappe, who also played in the match, which saw PSG beat PSG 2-1.
‘There was a lot of noise and they gave Gigio quite a difficult reception. I think it was a bit too much, but there you go, that’s football nowadays,’ Mbappe said.
‘The fans do what they want, we can’t know what they feel inside. We protected Gigio as much as we could, and we feel sorry for him this evening.’
Speaking on the defeat, Mbappe stated, ‘It is a defeat, a second defeat away from home; it is never easy to lose; we are disappointed. We failed in quite a few things, and we will try to respond at home against Newcastle.’
The match was the second one their team has lost, so reporters asked Mbappe why he thought their team was losing away matches. He said he did not know.
‘I don’t know, I don’t know (regarding the difficulties away from home). We are disappointed, we tried to put all the ingredients on our side to win, but it didn’t happen like that,’ he replied.

While Donnarumma was suffering at PSG, Steven Gerrard was having a bad time at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, to the point that some think he might be rethinking his job as a coach at the club.
The former Liverpool player had said at the time of his entrance into the club, ‘I think there were a lot of reasons for me wanting to join the club. I think the club has a lot of good people who represent the club from the board down. When I went down to Saudi, I got a real family feel; they made me feel extremely welcome.
‘There are three things that I always consider and they are in a particular order. It needs to be right for my family first and foremost, we have to be excited and motivated by the challenge.
‘I think the football project needs to be ambitious, it needs to be for the right reasons in terms of the challenge and the remit. And of course, you need to feel secure, that the contract is right, but that always comes at the very end. It was a combination of reasons and I’m extremely excited and happy.
‘I can’t wait to start and meet all the supporters and all the players. But the people I have met so far that represent Al-Ettifaq have been absolutely outstanding and I think we share a lot of things in common.’
There is still hope for the two before the season winds to a close, though.
