Liverpool player Luis Diaz’ father is to be released, according to trusted sources, but the time and conditions are yet undisclosed.

The player recently returned from his homeland, Colombia, to feature in a match between Luton and the Merseyside Reds and scored an important equaliser as a late substitute.

Coach Jurgen Klopp gave an update concerning the American before the match.

‘It is still emotional but he decided three days ago that he wanted to train again. The football pitch is a safe place for the boys and somewhere where he can, for a few minutes at least, forget about what is going on,’ said Klopp.

‘All the signs he is getting are positive. Negotiations are ongoing but they are positive and that is why he wanted to be part of the team. He trained well and he can come on, there is no issue with that side of things, that is why he is here.’

Luis Diaz has been off the pitch since his parents got abducted on October 28. Though his mother is now released, his family is still in distress because of his father’s still being a hostage.

The Colombian government have released a seemingly toothless statement calling for the man’s release.

‘Today we have officially learned that the kidnapping carried out on October 28, in Barrancas, department of La Guajira, of which Luis Manuel Díaz and Cilenis Marulanda, father and mother of the soccer player Luis Fernando, were victims Díaz Marulanda, was perpetrated by a unit belonging to the ELN,’ a Columbian government statement said.

‘Although Mrs. Marulanda was released a few hours later, the player’s father has been kidnapped for five days.

‘As a delegation of the National Government for peace talks with the ELN, we express all our solidarity with Luis Díaz, his family, with the entire country and with the millions of followers of the player in the world.

‘We demand that the ELN immediately release Mr. Luis Manuel Diaz, and we remind him that it is his entire responsibility to guarantee his life and integrity.

‘We remind the ELN that kidnapping is a criminal practice, violative of International Humanitarian Law, and that it is its duty in the development of the current peace process, not only to stop carrying it out, but also to eliminate it forever.

‘As part of the development of the agreement on the Ceasefire, our delegation will present this case to the current Monitoring and Verification Mechanism, and will carry out all necessary actions to achieve the immediate release and with guarantee of the life and integrity of Mr. Díaz.’

Former Liverpool player turned commentator Jamie Carragher commented, ‘What he [Luis Diaz] and his family have been through in the past few weeks, you can’t help but feel absolute joy.

‘It is a great leap and gets Liverpool back in it. Some things are bigger and more important than football and what he has been through certainly are.’

What more? Luis Diaz’ mother said recently, ‘I want them to release him now. your family is waiting for you. That the people who are keeping him free him now back to me, because we want to have him back home.’

Since Diaz is back to work, it is most likely the man will be freed soon.
