Following Francis Ngannou’s fallout with UFC president, Dana White (over payment matters), the UFC superstar’s decision to join the boxing world lit a fire of excitement among fans of Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts alike. He chose none other to coach him for his first fight than Mike Tyson, a Boxing legend.

Ngannou’s debut is scheduled to unfold in a bout with one of Boxing’s finest, the WBC champion, Tyson Fury. Many have not been discreet with their assumption that he would lose, since they have seen Tyson Fury box, and are witnesses of both his strength an expertise.

Apart from the fact that the WBC champion excels in size and sturdiness, he has good footwork and deadly combinations of Boxing techniques built over years of training to win opponents via nothing but fists and footwork. Ngannou had been concentrating on all the parts of his body during that time, fitting himself for the kind of victories found only in the octagon.

Speaking at a recent mandatory press conference, the former UFC superstar revealed how he felt on being trained by Mike Tyson. The question he was asked, however, was what he was learning from the former superstar.

‘A lot of things. I’ve known Mike Tyson since I don’t know how long, and I’ve met him a couple of times and to have him this time around, I’m like, ‘Ok?’ I was a little confused sometimes.

I’m like, ‘He’s not here just to watch.’ He’s here because of my fight and to help me, and he’s actually giving me instructions and stuff, and I’m like, ‘Man, this is actually Mike Tyson. I’m not tripping. It’s real.’ That’s how big this is.’

The former-UFC fighter also seemed to say he was going to borrow Mike Tyson’s techniques.

‘Obviously, in a couple of months, nobody has ever imitated Mike Tyson’s style and do it as best as him,’ Ngannou said. ‘It’s not something I’m going to do. But still, there are a lot of things that I’m learning from him. He wasn’t just good at knocking people out. He was very good at moving and his boxing technique.’

Yet many think the percentage of the possibility of Francis Ngannou’s victory is inconsequential. Put in picture form, they expect it it look like Daniel Dubois’ recent fight with three-belt champion Olexandr Usyk.

One of those that spoke about the outcome of the Ngannou-Fury bout was Joe Joyce.

‘I’m intrigued to see the fight. He has power,’ said Joyce who has sparred with both superstars while talking about Ngannou. ‘If you let him hit you, he can hit you really hard and it’s gonna hurt. Fury needs to keep on the ball, because he doesn’t want to get nailed by him.’

What he said was uniform with most people’s testimonies and prediction: Ngannou can knock out Fury, but only when given a chance.

Speaking further, trying to explain how to win the bout, Joyce explained, ‘Close the distance, work inside. He can throw really powerful hooks and crosses, and with what Mike Tyson’s getting him to do I think that will be effective to avoid the jab and the long range shots from Fury. I’m really interested to see how it plays out – it only takes one shot in heavyweight boxing … it’s unlikely but he’s got a chance – it’s similar to Daniel Dubois-Oleksandr Usyk.’
The fight comes up on 28th October at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
