UFC: Daniel Cormier mocks Merab Dvalishvili’s reluctance to fight his friend, Aljermain Sterling

After Merab Dvalishvili refused to fight his friend and team mate, Aljermain Sterling, both the media and the UFC’s president have been on his tail. It was expected of him to fight Aljermain Sterling who most recently lost his Bantamweight championship to Sean O’Malley in a controversial TKO.

Sean O’Malley is facing elsewhere for opponents amid Aljermain Sterling’s call for a rematch. It does not seem like that would change any time soon, because many, including Israel Adesanya believed that Aljermain Sterling lost. But Sterling, speaking after the match confessed he was well aware of himself, and preparing an attack while lying on the canvas.

O’Malley has beforehand given him a messy pounding, at the end of which he clearly looked unable to defend himself, talk more of fighting back.

Because of this alleged wrong call by the referee in the person of Marc Goddard, Merab Dvalishvili joined voices with Sterling to call for an immediate rematch. Something many think would never come to reality. What remained was for Dvalishvili to challenge Aljermain Sterling, and after winning his good friend in the brutal contest, go ahead to challenge the new champion, Sean O’Malley.

Last time the UFC president uttered what looked like a warning to both Sterling and Dvalishvili. They might have to leave the UFC if their strange brotherhood continued to hinder the entertainment of the masses. Merab Dvalishvili has challenged Sean O’Malley, but it seems the UFC are in no haste to think about the challenge or approve it.

 

So Dvalishvili posted the following message on his X wall:

Every UFC win since my 1st in 2018 I called out @SugaSeanMMA @ufc and Sean ignored my call outs.I say I don’t want to fight my teammate and brother @funkmasterMMA and the media goes crazy! If there is no immediate rematch I am Number 1 for this Title match. There should be NO question.

@SugaSeanMMA is Sean O’Malley’s X handle, @funkmasterMMA is Aljermain Sterling’s.

Now Sterling agrees Dvalishvili should go ahead and fight with O’Malley.

Both of them do not want to fight each other in the octagon, preferring to graduate into higher weight classes one after the other without ever meeting.

This is a very hard road that might mean being a hindrance to each other at some point. But Daniel Cormier, who has been in Dvalishvili’s shoes before had something surprising to say.

‘Merab is saying, ‘I don’t want to be fighting my friend.’ I will also tell you this: Part of the reason I didn’t want o fight Cain Velasquez was because I knew what happened in the gym every day. So the question is, how is Merab doing with Aljo to know he doesn’t really want to fight this guy?’

‘The friendship is obviously No. 1. But also, you know in training with that guy how tough it would be to get a victory over him – if possible at all. Generally, the guy that doesn’t want the fight is the guy that is not the champion. In this case, that’s Merab Dvalishvili.’

At one time the UFC officials might have to back down and give Dvalishvili a shot with O’Malley. But if Dvalishvili loses that fight, then things are likely to get messier.
