Deontay Wilder’s fight drought seems to be drawing so much ‘sympathy’ from fellow heavyweights these days, with another heavyweight star challenging the former WBC champion following the most recent one.

Since Deontay Wilder lost his WBC heavyweight championship to Britain’s Tyson Fury, the American has fought only once in the ring.

In the wake of the recent challenge Deontay Wilder got after talks to meet fellow-former champion Anthony Joshua dissolved in the water, an undefeated Cuban fighter has publicly challenged the fighter, who many think is inferior only to the arguably-best, Tyson Fury.

This fighter is none other than Frank Sanchez. Sanchez is a Cuban professional boxer born in Guantanamo, Cuba, in 1992. He has held the NABO heavyweight title since 2019 and the WBC Continental Americas heavyweight title since 2020. He has a record of 23 wins and 1 no contest in a total of 24 fights. Frank Sanchez, also known as ‘The Cuban Flash’, has a height of 6 feet 4 inches. He is an orthodox boxer.

‘It will be a year before Tyson Fury and Usyk have two fights, and this is too long to wait for a championship fight … Jared Anderson will not fight me … This leaves Deontay Wilder. I understand that [the past challenger] is asking for ridiculous money, so forget him. I will be reasonable with money because I know I will win against Wilder,’ announced Sanchez.

Sanchez had a successful amateur career before turning professional. He represented Cuba in international tournaments and won multiple medals, including a gold medal at the 2013 World Series of Boxing Championship. Frank Sanchez’ made his professional debut on February 23, 2017, with a first-round knockout victory over Ramon Aguinaga. Since then, he has amassed an impressive record of 23 wins, no losses, and one no contest.

What the Cuban is known for in the ring is his technical skills, speed, and agility. He possesses good footwork and has a solid defensive game. He often displays a combination of power and finesse in his fights. Some of his notable fights include victories against Joey Dawejko, Victor Bisbal, and Brian Howard. These wins have showcased his abilities and helped him gain recognition in the heavyweight division. He keeps training under top Cuban coaches.

‘I respect Wilder,’ Sanchez had added. ‘He is a very strong fighter, but I think I will come out victorious. I hope he considers a fight with me. I think boxing fans would be interested in this fight. Let’s see what happens in the future, but all I can do is stay prepared with Eddy and be ready for anything.’

It seems more likely that this request will be more attractive to Deontay Wilder because of the money that would be involved. Secondly, Wilder will likely expect to win the Cuban, who, to have a widely-watched match and, if possible, a higher victory, offered to take a small pay.
