Mike Tyson has disclosed who he thinks is the best heavyweight boxer of the era.

Tyson did this while discussing the new WBC rating given to Francis Ngannou, his trainee, following a successful debut against Tyson Fury on October 28.

President of the WBC, Mauricio Suleiman, proposed in the days after the match that Francis Ngannou’s performance during the match should earn him a place among the world’s best boxers, though Ngannou lost the match by a narrow split decision. It was later discovered that Suleiman went ahead to convince the WBC concerning this, which landed Ngannou in tenth place among the WBC’s best heavyweights.

Mike Tyson was dissatisfied with this rating and said Tyson Fury was the best boxer of the era while criticising the decision.

‘He [Ngannou] did a great job with one of the greatest fighters of all time,’ argued Tyson. ‘His first time boxing, fighting for the heavyweight championship, fighting against the best heavyweight of his era. He deserves a lot of credentials after that.’

By this, Tyson meant that the tenth place was too low.

The crash course Mike Tyson gave Ngannou while the contest was still a dream paid off immensely in the trainee’s attacking system, aggressiveness, and ability to box with a heavyweight like Tyson Fury for ten rounds. Ngannou’s most-discussed deed in the ring that day was that he struck down Fury in the third round—something nearly no one might have expected from a new boxer.

Mike Tyson still believes Tyson Fury is the best boxer of the era, which means he believes that Ngannou should develop his skills further.
