Bruno Fernandes says the mood atmosphere is bad at Manchester United following loss to competitive Copenhagen
The news coming from Old Trafford is not surprising after Copenhagen recently avenged themselves on Manchester United by beating the Red Devils 4-3. United player Bruno Fernandes said the club felt disappointed both by the controversial refereeing and the bad results it triggered.
In reply to being asked what the mood was at Old Trafford, Fernandes said, ‘Disappointment. I think for everything we did in the game, we could and should have gotten something.
‘It is difficult at the moment, obviously, and the mood is not the best because I think we fought so hard with ten men that even from then on it was playing against a team that plays really well on the ball, and as a part of that, many decisions went against us.
‘Today was a tough day but I think the team effort was good. We tried. We could have done some things better, but it was difficult for us from thirty minutes on, playing with one player less.’
Coach Erik Ten Hag agreed that the referee played a big and unfair part in the final result.
‘The red card changes everything. I think when you freeze frame it, it always looks so much worse and as I say it takes them so long and they make a red card of it,’ Ten Hag complained.
‘Come on. The first 25 minutes we dictated, dominated the game, went 2-0 up and then the red card changes everything. We are down to 10 and we are very disappointed.’
The coach went further to call the officiating harsh.
‘We conceded two goals before half-time which should never count. The first is offside, a player is in front of Andre Onana. The second is a penalty that’s very harsh.
‘The ball on the hand, but it’s so close and the hand is in such a normal position. He [Harry Maguire] went for the ball and the ref needs such a long time. That is in four games, four penalties against us, and I say three are very debatable.
‘I’m very disappointed about such decisions. The game is never meant to be like this. This has nothing to do with football.
‘Decisions have to be made and I accept also wrong decisions are made by some at this level. Three such tough decisions (against FC Copenhagen). You control the game and the game is never meant to be for that.’
Bruno Fernandes disclosed that the Red Devils’ eyes are now occupied with winning their next two matches against Galatasaray and Luton.
‘Even before this game, that was still the belief: to win the last three games of the group stage. And now we have to,’ continued Fernandes.
‘We have to win them. If we want to stay in the Champions League and stay in the best competition, we have to win against the best.
‘We have a really tough game away against Galatasaray and after we play against the top of the group. We want to win both, but now we have to focus on Luton, because it is going to be a tough game again.
‘We need three points in the league and we need to get back to the winning track after this defeat.’
Ten Hag has strong trust in his suffering team, though.
‘This squad is resilient and the whole season so many decisions are against us, so many setbacks for injuries. I said to the lads it will turn, one moment in the season it will turn in our favour,’ the Dutch coach said.
