Erik Ten Hag’s style fails at Manchester United, faces calls for substitution
Manchester United’s coach Erik Ten Hag became the subject of brutal backlash after United’s 3-0 loss to Newcastle. Ten Hag might be changed very soon, according to the latest events.
The mess repeating on most matchdays since this season started and complaints coming from players’s training sessions all summarise in one thing: Ten Hag’s management is not working at Manchester United.
Zlatan Ibrahimovich stated lately that the coach lacked what it took to deal with big players, but one could wonder how the same coach was able to lead the club to their first ever cup after six years last season if not by how he related with players. One would wonder what changed this season.
But Ten Hag’s inability to manage younger men like Jadon Sancho, who is still in exile, and Cristiano Ronaldo showed the accusation might be true. Now the club, which is among the most respectable in the Premier League, is performing at the level of a team destined for a second division, much to the dissatisfaction of both fans and the players themselves.
After being accused of showing favouritism and putting them in uncomfortable roles by players, Erik Ten Hag seemed to have continued without receiving much backlash, but now it seems that Ibrahimovic’s call for his sack has been repeated by Paul Merson.
Paul Merson spoke about the terrible defeat United just suffered, counting in the others: ‘It was shocking. It was poor. They were out of ideas again. It’s constantly been said over a number of years with Manchester United. You don’t see an identity, and you don’t see what they’re trying to do.
‘When you watch other teams, you can see what they’re trying to do but they got dominated in midfield by Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton.
‘Newcastle made eight changes and United have been beaten 3-0. I personally think the manager has lost the players. There’s ways of losing football matches, and everyone loses matches, but they were completely beaten tonight after going 1-0 down as they were last week [against Manchester City].
‘It was just too easy for Newcastle. Tonight, they should’ve been rabbits in headlights going to Old Trafford but they just went out and played.
‘The face I see every week is Ten Hag chewing gum, stone-faced. It’s all I see and something has got to be done.
‘It’s now a big game on Saturday away to Fulham. I don’t see how much further this goes on. I know I read in the papers it could cost £15m. I know they may say that’s a lot but they’ve just let £80m go to waste in not playing Jadon Sancho.
‘They chased this kid for I don’t know how long, he says one thing, and now he’s completely out. He’ll probably go out on loan in January and they’ll be paying half his wages.
‘This needs to get sorted and personally I think it’s toxic. I don’t take any notice of it being toxic behind the scenes. I am more worried on the pitch which is where it counts.
‘They are all over the place and if not for a last-minute penalty they would have drawn at home to Copenhagen. Come on, get serious.
‘For me, he is under serious pressure and they have got to have a meeting and see what they do. He has lost the players, you don’t start getting beat the way they are getting beat.
‘Everybody loses football matches but there are ways of losing and tonight, like last week, they were just completely beaten. It is not good at all. Everything was too easy for Newcastle.’
Antony Dos Santos’ return to the team did nothing to their performance, rather, the mess continues to increase.
Ten Hag had this to say about that: ‘The team is not playing well when we don’t bring him the balls and I am also responsible for that.
‘But obviously, there was also a lot of noise and that dropped his levels. He can do better but all the players can do better.
‘Antony is also a fighter, he has the confidence, he is brave and I am confident he will bring the performance that he is the right player for us.’
It seems the coach learned to stop public criticism of his players, but that could be too late.
