Gary Neville on Man Utd’s messy defeat: ‘Ten Hag’s got some real thinking to do’
Gary Neviile, who was formerly a player for Manchester United but is now a pundit, said the club’s players were like nine-year-olds in their recent match against Newcastle, in which the Geordies beat them 3-0. He also said Manchester United’s coach, Erik Ten Hag, had some serious thinking to do.
Newcastle’s coach, who led his team to their first ever defeat of United at Old Trafford since 2013, was proud of himself and his team, saying what he thought got his team the big result.
‘It was a very good performance from us,’ said Newcastle’s coach Eddie Howe. ‘The mentality was brilliant.
‘We had injuries and picked one up early. It was a great response.
‘I don’t think there are any easy games in the quarter-finals. We hope to go one better than last season.
‘We return to the Premier League with Arsenal. I know we have a tough schedule ahead and we look forward to it.’
Gary Neville did no deny the Geordies’ performance was superior.
‘Well done to Newcastle,’ he said. ‘They made changes and took a chance but they fully deserved this tonight. But for Man Utd, I’m not quite sure how Ten Hag lifts them for the weekend because the Manchester derby on Sunday was bad and tonight has just cemented what we’ve seen in the last few days.
‘Lacking in ideas and Ten Hag’s got some real thinking to do. You can’t say it hasn’t been coming. Man United have lost their discipline in the last 10 minutes, they have looked anxious and the crowd have been quiet.
‘Garnacho gets muscled off it. Livramento goes around Mount like he is not there. Dalot is sleeping, Almiron is not. Can he finish, by goodness he can.’
‘It is a beautiful strike by Lewis Hall but look at those five Man United players when they give it away, they are just sleeping, complaining to the referee, whinging.
‘While they are whinging, Newcastle are winning. Dalot gets back to Willock, but it comes back across. Maguire can’t get enough distance on the header and that is a wonderful strike. Such a controlled, smooth volley.
‘As soon as the free-kick was given away, the five of them turning around to have a go at the referee while Newcastle were playing, it was like schoolboy stuff, under nines.’
Dissatisfied-and-under-attack Ten Hag took responsibility for the messy loss that followed a recent loss to so-called rival Manchester City.
‘We know this is not good enough. We have to take responsibility for it, I have to take responsibility for it.
‘We don’t give the performance, so I feel sorry for the fans. It is below our standards and we have to put it right. We have to recover from it but we have to quickly recover – Saturday is the next game (against Fulham), and we have to raise our standards. This is not good enough.’
‘We have, I’m confident of that. Players will stand up, they are sticking together – you have seen, they have tried. But we know this is not good enough, and as I said, I’m responsible for this, and we have to do this together.’
‘You have to be disciplined and you have to do it with togetherness, everyone has to take responsibility, be accountable and co-operate. That’s the key word.’
It seems Ten Hag has been making blunders in his on- and off-pitch decisions most of this season and needs to do some really serious thinking, as Gary Neville advised.
