New CEO Omar Berrada tasked with Manchester United’s mess

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer brothers, the owners of Manchester United, will look to see how new CEO Omar Berrada will save the Reds from their mess.

Ratcliffe’s 25% takeover at the club paved way for his influence in angles concerned with hiring and staff management. This new appointment was decided by him and the other co-owners, the Glazer brothers.

However, Berrada will be under a harsh spotlight because of his tweets dating as far back as 2014. He is known to have said that Manchester United was a mess, and to have supported Chelsea and Bayern Munich during their different matches with United.

The respectable football club operations manager was born to Moroccan parents, went to school in the United States of America, worked as a top official at Barcelona Football Club, and was CEO of about 11 clubs — which included Manchester City — before being won over by Manchester United.

Many are still surprised that Ineos’ chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers chose a chronic critic of the club, and because Berrada opted to retain those old tweets.

But it is possible that businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe pushed for the appointment because of the African’s performance while working for CFG (City Football Group). CFG oversees Manchester City and 11 other clubs around the world.

According to the statement posted on manutd.com, the move was made to improve the club’s performance. It reads as follows:

‘The Club is determined to put football and performance on the pitch back at the heart of everything we do. Omar’s appointment represents the first step on this journey.

‘As one of the most experienced football executives at the top of European football, Omar brings a wealth of football and commercial expertise, with a proven record of successful leadership and a passion to help lead change across the Club. He is currently serving as Chief Football Operations Officer for City Football Group overseeing 11 clubs across five continents and, prior to this, held senior roles at Barcelona.

‘It is our stated ambition to re-establish Manchester United as a title-winning club. We are pleased that Omar will be joining us to help achieve that goal, so that, once again, United fans can see, in the words of Sir Matt Busby, the red flag flying high at the summit of English, European and world football.

‘Omar’s start date will be confirmed in due course; in the meantime, Patrick Stewart will continue as interim CEO.’

Berrada’s past will come back to bite him if he fails to set things aright at the club. His past records will not save him from the reaction of the Red Devils’ fans.
