Pundits Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes believe that Manchester United made mistakes while hiring new players during the past transfer window, with Scholes saying the situation at the club is not entirely the coach’s fault.

Coach Erik Ten Hag now leads a club that most believe will not lift any trophy this season, or attain a top spot in any competition as for now.

Former players of Manchester United, Scholes and Ferdinand, think the coach led some bad signing adventures that rewarded the club with semi-liabilities.

But Scholes thought the Dutchman’s coaching was really underwhelming in relation to United’s bout with Newcastle.

‘I think it’s very difficult to decide who is letting who down to be honest,’ said Scholes.

‘These players have let two or three managers down now, a lot of these players have.

‘Yes, they have a few new faces in there now but the Newcastle performance was worrying for me – I don’t think Ten Hag’s position was being questioned before that but not being able to get his players to work hard enough to face Newcastle was scary.

‘It’s not enough at a club like this, you need to be working week in, week out, it’s not been good enough.’

Then he wished United had purchased Harry Kane who now puts smiles on the faces of Bayern Munich, instead of some three players.

‘Harry Kane, £100million and he’s yours. He’d have wanted to come here, 100 per cent. The other one is Declan Rice, another £100million,’ he commented. ‘Then you’re buying properly known quality, the right characters, they know the country, the club, and I thought it was so easy.’

To this, Rio Ferdinand replied, ‘I agree, maybe the character and resilience was what they needed more than anything.

‘More than talent – not that they don’t have that, they have it in abundance – but the overall problem with this club at the moment is off the pitch.

‘They would both come in and sort that out, they’d lead that in a better way. We’ve seen the way they’ve walked into their new clubs, they’re probably the two best performance-wise there.’
