Paul Scholes points out the issue with Man Utd players’ confidence
In his recent comment while discussing the state of things among the coach and the players at Manchester United, former Manchester United player Paul Scholes revealed his observation concerning the confidence of the players.
Following a nice performance from United players at Old Trafford against Copenhagen in the wake of Sir Bobby Charlton’s demise, they got beaten 4-3 lately at Copenhagen’s home, much to the displeasure of fans who were tired of seeing their club continue to lose.
The red card received by the most respectable player at Manchester United, Marcus Rashford, was one of the tragic incidents that took place in their recent match.
While revealing his observations from the match and those of others he watched, Paul Scholes said they lacked leadership and had weak confidence. He went further to explain.
‘They lacked a bit of leadership. It’s not easy to play away in Europe,’ recalled Scholes. ‘It’s just that collapsing that’s hurting them. Once they concede one it feels like another is coming. You can’t keep doing that every week.’
All failure to win matches as a great club like Manchester United is expected to have placed the coach Erik Ten Hag on the grilling wire, and it seems none is prepared to end the heat. Rather, many are calling for the Dutchman’s sack.
Scholes did not think the man should be relieved of his services yet.
‘I still don’t feel like there’s that much pressure on Erik ten Hag,’ Scholes observed. ‘He had a good year and bought some time. He’s had bad injuries but nine defeats in 17 is not good enough. I know United have sacked before, but I don’t think they can afford to keep doing that, I think we’ve got to let this fella go with it.’
Manchester United is getting ready to face Luton next, and it is possible the weight of the team’s recent performance is weighing heavily on the players.
There could always be the fear of adding loss to loss and the harsh reaction they must expect from fans, pundits, and the wider public in such a case. Erik Ten Hag’s seeming inability to deal with the team and the tension are not making things easy for anybody either.
With Jadon Sancho still placed on the sidelines due to the deadlock between him and the coach and some chosen players like Harry Maguire and goalkeeper Audrey Onana delivering less than expected, their woes might persist till January.
