New United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been making constructive changes at Old Trafford since his takeover of more than 25% of the club, and one of his alleged plans was to appoint Zidane as gaffer.

Incumbent manager Erik Ten Hag succeeded to keep United among the top six on the Premier League table, but their fans are not enjoying the show.

There have been calls for the coach’s dethronement, and it was not expected that Ratcliffe would change the Dutchman till the rumour started.

Now Zidane who seemed to catch the Ineos chief’s fancy has declined the Premier League opportunity, saying that he would like to work there but had a reason to reject the job.

‘Would I want to go to Manchester [United]?’ he said. ‘I understand English, but I’m not completely fluent in it. I know that there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work in a different way.

‘Many elements come into play in order to win, it is a global context. I know what I need to win.’

In order to lead the players effectively when they are on the pitch, the Frenchman has to be capable of expressing himself in English with a certain degree of fluency.
